Growing up, I saw and felt details – the plastic rattle, sidewalk cracks, stones that scratched colors. I stared at available graphics and art that inspired me, like the good guys logo, and Curious George and Mad Magazine. I saw things a little differently than my family and the kids around me. I drew compulsively.
Much later, starting with stamp carving and stencils, I decided to re-explore art, first with sketching, using my natural propensity towards detail and precision; then open up, allowing randomness into my process.
When painting on ceramic tile, I can't see the outcome while working, color opacity is impossible to judge, and the gloppy paint is tricky to apply. The baked results can be touched.
With watercolor, I keep the 'mistakes' in my initial sketch. Sometimes, I start with ink, allowing it to run with the paint.
I am also creating childrens books and illustrations. I have mostly been working in watercolor and ink, with cut-outs and stencils.
